Para todos aquellos amantes de la música, de la cultura pop, de la moda, Little Monsters, KatyCats, Smilers no hace falta recordar que sucede este domingo 25 en Brooklyn, EEUU. Para todos aquellos despistados que no tengan una tele en casa, os informo: Nuevamente como cada año se celebra la gala de los MTV Video Music Awards, y por lo que parece, va a ser la mejor de los últimos años. Ya se que esto se dice siempre, y a pesar de que desde 2003 (y con la excepción de 2007) los VMAs ya no son lo que eran, la lista de invitados y actuaciones hace pensar que MTV se ha currado mucho la gala de este año en la que Justin Timberlake debería llevarse todo. Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Robin Thicke, Macklemore, Miley Cyrus y una posible reunión de NSYNC sobre el escenario, más muchas sorpresas es lo que nos espera este domingo. Si por algo destacan los VMA , es porque parece que los estilistas de las estrellas están de vacaciones borrachos en Aruba, porque si no, no me lo explico. Desde siempre, esta gala y su alfombra roja han dejado looks y actuaciones para el recuerdo. Os hago un recuento de los 10 looks más icónicos a mi ver, de la historia de los VMA. No sleep til!
All music, pop culture and fashion lovers, Little Monsters, KatyCats, Smilers already know what's going to happen this sunday 25th in Brooklyn, US. For those who don't have a TV at home, I inform you: As every year, the MTV Video Music Awards takes place, and for what it seems, it's going to be one of the best shows in years. I know this is what MTV says every year, but everybody knows that the VMA, with the exception of 2007, has not been the same since 2003. However, the perfomance list makes me think that MTV is going to improve a lot from last year's boring show. Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Robin Thicke, Macklemore, Miley Cyrus and a rumoured stage reunion of NSYNC should be enough for you to watch the show. If the VMAs are known for something, it is because the stylists of the stars seem to be on holidays and drunk somewhere in the Caribbean. The VMAs redcarpet has given us looks to remember forever. 10. NSYNC VMA 2000
Ayyy que malos fueron los primeros años de los "2000" para la moda. Technowaves, piercings en el ombligo, zapatillas anchas, estampados imposibles, chandals... Obviamente, la boyband más importante del momento (con permiso de los BSB) también cayeron en las redes de la horterez. Y es que la aparición de los NSYNC en los VMA del 2000 son la perfecta imagen de lo que NO tiene que volver de esa década. Ese Justin con ricitos, jersey de ochos, pantalones de cocodrilos, y que aun salía con Britney: Never forget.
Awwww, how awful was the beginning of the last decade for fashion. Technowaves, iercings all over the body, sneakers and tracksuits for every ocassion... The most important boy-band of that time, was obviously following all those trends, and all of their members bought tickets to tackyville. In fact, I'd say that the red carpet looks of NSYNC at the 2000 VMAs is a master class of everything that should NEVER EVER come back again. That Timberlake with curly hair: Never forget.
9. PAMELA ANDERSON & TOMMY LEE VMA 1999
Los VMA del 99 fueron épicos. Ricky Martin, un recién llegado Eminem ganando artista revelación, Lauryn Hill triunfando con cuatro premios, y Britney Spears siendo ignorada con uno de los videos pop más icónicos de todos los tiempos: Baby One More Time. Tan icónicos como los looks de Pamela Anderson y Tommy Lee. Gabardina de Burberry con culete al aire para él, pamela rosa, las tetas en el cuello, y dos kilos de sombra de ojos azul para ella. Elegancia pura.
1999 VMAs were epic. Ricky Martin, a barely known newcomer called Eminem taking home the Best New Artist trophy, Lauryn Hill slaying with 4 awards, and Britney Spears being robbed for one of the most iconic pop videos of all time: Baby One More Time. As iconic as Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee looks. Burberry trench with no underwear for him, pink hat, huge boobs and tons of blue eye shadow for her. Pure elegance.
8. P!NK VMA 2000
Todos tenemos un pasado, y aunque ahora la veamos como una cantante de pop-rock medianamente elegante, los looks de P!nk (y remarco, P!nk, que no Pink) eran más propios de una chunga de un extrarradio del Berlín de los 80. Haciendo honor a su nombre artístico, se nos presentaba de esta guisa. Peinado que es casi incluso capaz de alejar la atención de los pendientes de aro y de ese abrigo. Just give me a reason, P!nk.
We all have a past, and even though we now see her as a "classy" pop-rock singer, P!nk's looks (because it's P!nk and not Pink) were more suitable for a Berlinese suburb in the 80's. Paying an homage to her artistic name, she showed up like this. Her do, can almost distract us from looking at those earrings and that coat. Just give me a reason, P!nk.
7. CHRISTINA AGUILERA VMA 2003
Los VMA de 2003 dieron la que para mi es hasta la fecha la mejor actuación en la historia de MTV. Y Cavalli le dio a la todavía por entonces "Xtina" esta "creación por así llamarla. El vestido "pink flamingo" se ha convertido en uno de los momentos estelares sobre la alfombra roja de esta artista tan infravalorada actualmente. A fecha de hoy no se sabe a ciencia cierta si algún ave murió para su realización, y ninguna stripper de Las Vegas interpuso demanda contra Christina por robo. Así que todos contentos, y escucha The Voice Within.
2003 VMAs were the stage where the most memorable performance of MTV's history took place. Cavalli gave Xtina this dress to rock the red carpet. And hell yes, she did. The "pink flamingo" dress remains as one of Xtina's most memorable red carpet moments to date. If dozens of birds were harmed in the making of this dress still remains unknown, and none Vegas stripper sued Xtina for robbery. So everything's fine, and trust The Voice Within.
6. MARILYN MANSON & ROSE MCGOWAN VMA 1998
Nos vamos un poco más atrás, concretamente hace 15 años. Por aquel entonces Madonna lo petaba con Ray Of Light, y había parejas impresionantes, como la formada por Rose y Marilyn. Manson, con esa apariencia que resulta de un mix entre Mario Vaquerizo y Karmele Marchante, en otra ocasión hubiese opacado al resto de asistentes en la alfombra. En cualquier otra ocasión en la que su novia no se hubiese presentado practicamente desnuda. Y pensabais que era inocente cuando veíais Embrujadas...
We're going down in memory lane again, 15 years back. By that time, Madonna was smashing with Ray Of Light and there were outrageous couples such as Manson & McGowan. Marilyn, would have taken all the attention from the paps with his colorful attire had it not been because Gowan was almost naked. And you thought she was innocent when she appeared in "Charmed"...
5. LIL KIM VMA 1999
Abrimos el top 5 con una rapera que muchos no conoceréis. La susodicha, la chunga que va a reventar a Nicki Minaj como siga copiandose de ella apareció con este controvertido mono, con un pecho al descubierto cubierto por una flor. El conjunto, pasó a la historia más adelante en la gala, cuando the one and only Diana Ross (borracha probablemente) jugó con la teta de Lil Kim frente a millones de espectadores. Ayyy las pelucas moradas, han pasado más de 10 años y están de rabiosa Katy Perry actualidad.
The top 5 starts with a rapper that the younger readers might not know. Lil Kim, the inspiration behind most of Nicki Minaj crazy outfits appeared at the 1999 VMAs with this controversial jumpsuit, showing of a breast, only covered by a flower. The outfit made headlines later during the show, when the one and only, Diana Ross jiggled it in front of millions of people.
4 GWEN STEFANI VMA 1998
La que junto a Xtina, es para mi una de las artistas femeninas más infravaloradas de nuestro tiempo, es innegablemente un icono de estilo desde que apareció. Más bien un icono de estiloS, porque lleva ya unos cuantos años. Su look en los VMA de 1998, la consolida como una referencia dentro del estilo grunge o del estilo new age o hipster que reina hoy en día. Pelo azul, brillantitos pegados en la cara..... no falla.
One of the most underrated female artist of the 90's and 00's is an undeniable fashion and style icon. I'd say styleS icon, because she's been in the game for quite a long time. Her iconic 1998 VMAs look, established her as reference for grunge, new age and hipster lovers. Blue hair, tiny crystals glued to her forehead...... Stunning.
3. LADY GAGA VMA 2010
La primera que se sube al podio en tercera posición es una estrella que a pesar de su corta trayectoria, ya se ha establecido como una fuerza dentro de los VMA. Lady GaGa puso un broche de oro a su etapa "The Fame Monster" con esta gala, en la que no actuó, pero se llevó tres pemios, toda la atención, y nos dio un look para guardar en la hemeroteca de MTV. Tras el McQueen de la red carpet, y el Armani negro, subió a recoger el premio más importante de la gala con un vestido de carne para cantar cual gitana de Triana un adelanto de su siguiente single, "I'm beautifuuul in maaa wey, coz gaaad makes nooo mistakes, I'm on de rait trak, beibi I guos booorn this weeey". Hasta la fecha, sigue siendo el look más icónico de su carrera. Las caras de Cher, Katy y Ke$ha lo dicen todo.

2. BRITNEY SPEARS VMA 2001
Será la princesa del Pop, pero para mí y para MTV es la reina de los VMA. De hecho, yo abogo por que pasen a llamarse BMA de Britney Music Awards. Las 5 actuaciones a lo largo de su carrera, por diversos motivos, han pasado a la historia de la cultura pop, y aunque no lo hayan hecho sus looks en la red carpet, lo han hecho aquellos sobre el escenario. El mono carne de la actuación de Oops, el look colegiala, el de novia, el desastre de Gimme More, el vestido plateado de 2008 cuando arrasó por Piece Of Me. Sin embargo, una de las mejores actuaciones en la historia de MTV, a parte de dejar a todos el mundo con la boca abierta, dejó este look para el recuerdo. Bailarina oriental con serpiente incluida. Oficialmente otorgo a Britney el premio de artista pop más sexy. Según un tweet de hace unos meses de la misma princesa, la serpiente aun vive felizmente en un zoo. Y en la memoria de todos. It's Britney, bitch!
She might be the princess of pop, but she is definetely the queen of the VMAs. In fact, I'd make a petition to MTV to change the name of the show to "Britney Music Awards". The 5 show-stopping performances in her career belong to pop music history, and even if her red carpet looks were almost non existent, her looks on stage remain in everyone's mind. The school-girl look, the nude jumpsuit, the bride, the Gimme More disaster, the silver D&G dress for 2008... However, one of the best MTV performances EVER gave us another memorable look. Oriental dancer with the snake. I officially name Britney the sexiest female in the pop industry. According to a tweet by the princess herself, the python lives happily in a zoo. An in the memory of everybody. It's Britney, bitch!
1. MADONNA VMA 1984
¿Quien si no? Realmente no es solo por ser la primera gala de los VMA, y por ser su icónico traje de novia con el letrero de Boy Toy. Su mítica entrevista en la que irrumpe Courtney Love borracha, su beso de la muerte con Britney y Xtina, su look de hindú en la etapa Ray Of Light, cuando apareció vestida de hombre mucho antes de que Lady GaGa lo hiciese con "Yoü And I". Tener una carrera musical de éxito de 30 años y ser la reina del pop es lo que tiene. El puesto de honor va para la incomparable Madonna. Larga vida.
Who else could it be? Not only because she performed with one of pop music most iconic outfits on the first VMAs ever. Her legendary interview crashed by a wasted Courtney Love, her death kiss with pop royalty Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, her hindi look during the Ray Of Light era, when she appeared dressed as a man long before GaGa did it for her "You and I" performance in 2011". Having a successful music career of 30 years and being the Queen of Pop has its advantages. The top spot goes to the one and only Madonna. Long live.
