PRISM: EL VEREDICTO.

Si hay un álbum pop que está siendo esperado como agua de Mayo este otoño, aparte de Artpop, ese es PRISM, de Katy Perry. Y es que el tercer álbum de Perry, cuarto de Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (si, cuando no era conocida publicó un disco de música cristiana que debió vender alrededor de 100 copias) tiene que llenar el hueco dejado por Teenage Dream, el cual durante estos tres años ha vendido casi 6.000.000 copias a nivel mundial y la ha hecho merecedora de incontables números uno, premios y nominaciones (aunque cero Grammy´s) y el título de "Candy Queen" o de "Reina del Billboard". Digamos que podría tirarse un pedo, grabarlo, y estaría en el número uno de iTunes sin duda. Farty Perry.... interesante.
En un principio el disco se anticipaba como un cambio en su estética y su sonido hacia algo más oscuro, concepto que al final se debió quedar en la papelera de reciclaje de algún ejecutivo de Capitol Records, puesto que el cambio no es tan radical. Sin embargo podemos extraer dos conceptos de su nuevo material. Ahí va un análisis canción por canción.
If there's a pop record that has even more hype around than Artpop, that is PRISM, by Katy Perry. Perry's third album, Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson's 4th (yes, she released a christian rock album prior to her lesbian kiss inspired smash that propelled her to the stardom) has to fill Teenage Dream's shoes. This one over the past three years has moved 6.000.000 units worldwide and has earned her numerous awards and nominations, and the "Billboard Queen" and "Candy Queen" nicknames. Let's say she could record herself farting, release it, and it would it #1 on iTunes. At first, this album was marketed by herself as "dark", but that idea is resting in some Capitol Records executive's bin. The change is not that radical, but we can see some differences with her previous efforts. As well as two concepts on this record. Here's a detailed analysis song by song.
1 ROAR 9/10: Nada mejor para abrir el álbum que el éxitazo del año. Un alegre mid-tempo que ha sido numero uno hasta en Nigeria, Papúa y la Sierra de Gredos. Louder, louder than a lion, cuz I am champion, and you're gonna hear me rooo oh oh oh oooaaar, reza la canción, una joya comercial de mensaje esperanzador y de motivación. Sin sorpresas.
Nothing better to start the album that the smash of the year. A cheerful mid-tempo that has hit number one on every chart around the globe. Louder, louder than a lion, cuz I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me rooo oh oh oh oooaaar, prays this song, a pop classic with an uplifting message. No suprises here. Katy at her best.
2 LEGENDARY LOVERS 9'5/10: La sorpresa. Después de la genial pero esperadísima Roar, llega este temazo, que quedaría perfecto en voz de Lana Del Rey, con influencias tribales, hindis, y una letra preciosa y mística. "Take me down to the river , underneath the blood-orange sun, say my name like a scripture...". La ET de este disco, y que con un vídeo a los que nos tiene acostumbrados, tiene todo el potencial para ser cuarto single.
Oh, the surprise. After the both equally fun and predictable Roar, Katy delivers this hit, that would sound amazing in Lana Del Rey's voice, with tribal, hindi and arab influences, accompanied by mystic and enchanting lyrics. "Take me down to the river , underneath the blood-orange sun, say my name like a scripture...". PRISM's E.T for sure, and with a stunning video, it has all the shots to become her 4th single, and hit numer one on Billboard.
3 BIRTHDAY 8'5/10: Last Friday Night 2.0. Una canción del género Katy Perry, con unos agudos que en directo invocarán las nubes de Mordor, pero que en versión estudio suenan genial. El link que todos compartiremos en el muro de Facebook del cumpleañero de turno. 5º single? Sea como sea encanta desde la primera escucha.
Last Friday Night 2.0. A song from the genre that we could all agree to call "Katy Perry", with some high notes that might cause Mordor to come over your city while sung live, but that sound great in the studio version. This is the link that we'll all share on someone "who celebrates his birthday"'s Facebook. 5th single? Catchy from the first listen.
4 WALKING ON AIR 8/10: He de decir que al principio odié esta canción. Es un hecho la comparación con la intro de "Cover Girl" de RuPaul, y que sea como recién extraída de un bar de ambiente del NY de los 90. Aun así, este promo single consigue enganchar. Purpurina pa tós.
I have to admit that I didn't feel this song at the beginning. The intro sounds like RuPaul's Cover Girl intro, and it feels like taken from a raunchy gay club of the 90's NYC. However, it still manages to get stuck in your head. Glitter for everybody.
5 UNCONDITIONALLY 9/10: Su próximo número uno. El segundo single se presenta como una balada poderosa, con una percusión sutil pero que encanta y con un estribillo pegadizo, bonito y fácil. La canción favorita de la artista del álbum.
Her next number one hit. The second single comes as a power ballad, with a subtle but nice percussion and a catchy, beautiful and easy chorus. Her favourite song on the album.
6 DARK HORSE FEAT. JUICY J 8/10: Tenía que aparecer el Twerking por alguna parte. La canción quizás más oscura del album, y quizás la menos comercial (teniendo en cuenta que estamos hablando de Katy y no de Bjork). Genial para fiestas de Halloween y el toque Hip-Hop en su base le sienta de muerte. El segundo E.T del disco.
We all knew that twerking had to show up one way or another. Maybe the darkest and less commercial song on the album (ok, we're talking about Katy, not Bjork). Great for this Halloween's parties, and the hip-hop bass is amazing.
7 THIS IS HOW WE DO 8'5/10: Canción divertida, con un ritmillo cool de los 80, perfecta para una fiesta y con frases que serán icónicas dentro del fandom de los KatyCats como "Day drinking at the Wildcats, sucking real bad at Mariah karaoke". Mi apuesta para el tercer single. Lo puede petar mucho en Nochevieja en EEUU.
Fun and upbeat 80's inspired song, perfect for a party or a club, with lines that will become iconic among the KatyCats fandom such as "Day drinking at the Wildcats, sucking real bad at Mariah karaoke". My pick for the 3rd single. It could make such a slayage in New Year's Eve parties.
8 INTERNATIONAL SMILE 7/10: Otra canción chachi piruli, que aporta poco al disco, pero que es agradable al oido, con una temática hiper explotada por popstars y estrellas del hip-hop de todos los países, más concretamente Mr 305, Pitbull. Igual para el 34875 single.
Another fun song, that actually brings nothing new to the game, but that becomes easy even at the first listen. The theme has been more than exploited and over used by popstars and hip hop mc's around the world, more specifically, Mr 305. Pitbull.
9 GHOST 6'5/10: Un nuevo mid-tempo a mitad camino entre una balada y un descarte de "One Of The Boys". Todavía no se si es relleno o no, pero no termina de convencerme.
Again a song in between a mid-tempo and a ballad that could be a leftover from "One Of The Boys". I still don't know if it deserves to be on the album or not, but I always skip it.
ATENCIÓN! A partir de aquí parece que nos pasamos a escuchar un CD de otra era. Vienen las (buenas y malas) baladas.
WARNING! From now on, it looks like we're listening to a totally different album. Here they come. The ballads.
10 LOVE ME 6: Podría ser la Teenage Dream descafeinada del álbum. Con una letra triste y "profunda" pero con una melodía bastante dance, que podría haber sido la base de una versión acústica del nefasto "Oh La La" de Britney. Lo dicho, una balada cuqui, pero sin más. ATENCIÓN al momento Cher en el 2:37
It could be a less perfect version of Teenage Dream. With sad and "deep" lyrics but a dancey melody, the bass could come from an acoustic version of the inafmous "Oh La La" by Britney. A cute ballad. But that's it. Shoutout to the Cher moment around 2.37.
11 THIS MOMENT 5'5: Empieza como una canción de Robyn (es bien) pero va perdiendo fuelle, y es que ya la Perry empieza a repetirse en un disco con nada más y nada menos que 16 canciones. Bastante obviable.
It starts as a Robyn song (which is good) but it fades into boredom as the minutes go by. Katy starts to sound the same again, but in a 16 songs CD there has to be some filler. Pretty forgetable.
12 DOUBLE RAINBOW 6: Balada bastante tranquilita, escrita por Sia, la diosa de las mismas. Aun así, no consigue emocionar como baladas previas de Perry como Thinking Of You o Not Like The Movies. Aun así, su voz suena especialmente refinada en esta.
Quiet ballad, writeen by Sia, the queen of them. However, it doesn't match her previous efforts like "Not Like The Movies" or "Thinking Of You". In spite of this, her vocals are really on point, and she's able to showcase the power of her usually questioned voice.
13 BY THE GRACE OF GOD 7: Decepción total tras escucharla en directo en el iTunes Festival. Y si, la balada es genial, pero este disco necesitaba, NECESITA una versión en acústico de esta joya, con toques a The Corrs. Cierra la versión standard.
The studio version comes as such a dissapointment after hearing the live version in the iTunes Festival. The ballad's great, but it would de miles better had it been an acoustic version, which sounds much like The Corrs. This closes the standard version of PRISM.
BONUS TRACKS
14 SPIRITUAL 9'5: Justo cuando estaba a punto de dormirme, enmascarado como un bonus track aparece esta sorpresa, "casualmente" escrita por el novio de Katy, John Mayer. Con un nuevo toque "celta" o a The Corrs meets Alanis Morisette meets Moby meets Azure Ray, la Perry se sale en esta misteriosa canción, declaración de amor. Merece totalmente comprarse la versión Deluxe por este bonus.
Just when I was about to fall asleep, the first bonus track comes as a pleasant surprise, which is written by Katy's boyfriend, singer and songwritter John Mayer. With a celtic feel to it or The Corrs meets Alanis Morisette meets Moby meets Azure Ray, Perry is outstanding in this misterious song. The deluxe version is totally worth the price just because of this song.
15 IT TAKES TWO 6'5: Escrita por the one and only Emeli Sandé, It takes two es una balada que bien podría cantar la escritora y que en algún momento toma algún toque a "Just Give Me A Reason".Es bonita, y en cualquier otra circunstancia recibiría más puntuación, pero Katy, enough with this type of songs.
Written by no other than Emeli Sandé, It Takes Two is a ballad that would fit the writer better, and that it sounds during 5 seconds like P!nk's "Just Give Me A Reason". It should get a higher mark, but please Katy, enough ballads.
16 CHOOSE YOUR BATTLES 4: La última canción del disco no es la mejor manera de despedir a PRISM. Choose Your Battles se siente completamente anodina y sobrante. Probablemente la peor de todo el álbum, y en su top 5 de peores de toda su discografía. El estribillo se salva, pero again, después de casi 10 baladas, esto ya no sorprende.
The last song on the album is not the best way to say goodbye to PRISM. Choose Your Battles feels totally dated, boring and plain. The worst of PRISM and probaly on the top 5 songs that she should've never recorded. The chorus kind of rocks, but again, after an hour of ballads, this is pointless.
EL VEREDICTO: 7'5/10
HIGHLIGHTS: Roar, Legendary Lovers, Unconditionally, Spiritual.
PRISM nos muestra una Katy Perry más madura, con un CD que bien podría haberse dividido en dos partes; los hitazos y las que serán singles (de la 1 a la 7) y las baladas que se acaban haciendo pesadas y repetitivas (con alguna excepción) de la 8 hasta el final. Hacer un disco con 16 canciones es arriesgado (ejem Born This Way), y quizás Perry peca en exceso de tener unos singles muy buenos, y luego bastantes canciones de relleno "ni fu ni fa". Aun así es un buen disco, es pop y merece el hype que le rodea. No es tan primerizo ni pop rock como One Of The Boys, ni es tan Candy Queen como Teenage Dream. Es más un refrito de su anterior disco con cosas de los 90, 80, Morisette, The Corrs y Kelly Clarkson. Sin duda, hay Katy Perry para rato.
THE FINAL DECISSION: 7'5/10
PRISM showcases a more mature Katy Perry, with an album that could really be split into two; the smashes and the obvious hits (tracks 1 to 7) and the ballad EP, filled with songs that at some point get boring (tracks 8 to 16 with some exceptions). Making an album with 16 songs is complicated (aka Born This Way), and maybe Perry makes the mistake of having a bunch of smashes that will sell the album very well but then include to many fillers. However, it's a good pop record, and it deserves the hype around it. It's not as "pop rock" as One Of The Boys, not as "Candy Queen" as Teenage Dream, it's more of a mix between the latter and 80's and 90's rhytms, Morisette, The Corrs and Kelly Clarkson. There's Katy Perry for the years to come.

Me siento en la obligación de comentar contigo este ansiado disco. Primero de todo decir que soy gran fan de Katy Perry y este album me ha dejado un poco fuera de lugar.Me refiero igual es cosa mía pero veo en Katy un estilo diferente al que suele tener. Segundo ¡Mis canciones favoritas son las mismas que las tuyas! Empezando con Roar primera vez que la oí no me gustó nada... Ahora y después de oírla mil veces me gusta pero no es una canción que ame como suele pasarme con todas las de Katy, eso si, la letra para mi tiene un 10 redondo. Legendary Lovers OMG es algo tan distinto a toda la música que he oído... No puedo dejar de oírla... La música de fondo me encanta y me engancha y hace que quiero oírla una y otra vez!!!! Unconditionally y spiritual son de esas canciones que te hacen recordar momentos y me encantan, la verdad no es algo a lo que nos tiene acostumbrados Katy que suele hacer canciones super dinámicas
ResponderEliminary felices pero es que estas dos últimas canciones me vuelven loca!! Las demás canciones para mi son indiferentes e incluso prescindibles. Si, estan bien, pero nada destacables y decepcionantes en comparación a las cuatro anteriores. Madre mía que chapa he soltado así a lo tonto!!! No se que tenéis tú y tu blog que haceis que me emocione en cada entrada! Un besote y sigue así que eres genial!!
